I submit herewith a translation of a further

despatch received from the magistrate of the San On District

(sd) J.H.Stewart Lockhart

With reference to the rumour which you communicat-

that certain places outside the British boundary

in Chinese territory contemplated an attack on the Fat Heung

Sub-District within the boundary, I beg to inform you that I

have carefully ascertained by personal investigation that no

bad characters have assembled recently I

Wong Kong: and that I heard nothing about Pat Pat Heung Sub-

District being razed to the ground. I fear that was but a

baseless rumour. I have reported to the Governor-General and

now write to inform you.

F. S. The despatch of the San On Magistrate only reached

we to-day, as it had been sent to Hongkong in the first instance.
